U.S. West Coast ports slowdown: Air cargo charter is an option

13. February 2015 – As the crisis at the U.S. West Coast ports continues, more companies look for air cargo charter options.

The slowdown and now partial shutdown of ports on the U.S. West Coast is forcing many companies, especially from Japan, to switch and move some cargo with air chartered flights.

It looked like the labor talks were going well at some points, but now they have come to a deadlock again. Some ports on the West Coast had to shut down completely.

Therefore more and more companies shift to air cargo charter to keep their productions running.

The delays at the ports had been going on since October 2014, due to extensive labor talks between dockworkers and the shippers and terminal operators. The situation somehow was a reminder of the West Coast ports shutdown in 2002.

Now companies are trying to bypass West Coast ports by stockpiling goods, shipping through East coast ports, if possible, or use air cargo charter to solve immediate supply shortages.

Air shipments picked up strongly in January and companies continue to search for more options to move cargo on chartered flights.

The demand will rise in the next days, as Chinese New Year is approaching.
